![]() ![]() Clason that dispenses financial advice through a collection of parables in ancient Babylon. The Richest Man in Babylon is a 1926 book by George S. The little time you invest will leave you with some messages worth remembering throughout entire life! And give how short it is, I cannot help but recommend that this should be read by everyone, irrespective of the reading preferences. "Thy desires must be strong and definite. Again, though it might seem trivial, the author's subtle way of drawing the reader's attention towards the importance and methodologies are very effective in my opinion. The core principle moves around each person paying himself/ herself at least one tenth of monthly earnings as a means to ensure future happiness. While it might seem too simple to warrant writing an entire book about it, I think this would be a nice eye-opener for many. And that underlying concept here is the basic financial management. The Riches Man in Babylon is of those books like Alchemist: A simple story is being narrated with the aim of delivering a strong underlying idea (but unlike Alchemist, there's no multiple interpretations here). "No man's family can fully enjoy life unless they do have a plot of ground wherein children can play in the clean earth." Turns out, this is actually a fantastic read! The only reason I finally picked this up was to catchup with my non-fiction reading goals. The Richest Man in Babylon is one of those books that has been on my TBR forever. "Wealth that comes quickly goeth the same way." The hounds of consumerism will put out an equally persuasive message which will financially pull in the other direction and it will be back to potentially suffering from Aflatoxin poisoning while eating dry cat food to knock out this month's rent. Richest Man in Babylon combines a simple premise with a mysterious title to drag the reader through 150 pages of drudgery that could be summed up in a couple of sentences:ĭespite George Clason's (the author) best, somewhat self serving, intentions America has clever and deeper pocketed interests such as Capital One Master Card, Retailers, Payday Loan Centers, and the Brick and Mortar of the American Economy, Capitalism and Consumerism that are determined in showing us that being broke and having things is better than being the Richest man in Babylon and suffering our old acquaintances showing up at high school reunions in fancier cars than our mid 90's Toyota 4Runner.įor those that find Richest Man in Babylon persuasive, putting forward novel concepts that will motivate them to straighten out their finances, I've got bad news. There is too much money to be made in writing them. Books like Richest Man in Babylon, Rich Dad Poor Dad, the Millionaire next door will never go away unfortunately.

I sent an email to DeleFOCO, describing myself as a red-bearded Gringo with passable Spanish and a lot of acting experience. The email was a casting call for the film “Italia 90.” The name meant nothing to me, but as a longtime semi-professional actor, I was intrigued. Three months ago, I received an email from DeleFOCO, an “audiovisual community” that brings together industry talents from across Central America. Finally I sat down before the middle-aged man and his makeup kit. One by one, they sat down, received a dusting of base and jogged away. Other actors formed a line around a makeup artist. Actors milled around, pouring themselves coffee and water from plastic containers. Crewmembers adjusted lights and tinkered with audio equipment. “When you’re ready.”Īlejandra led me into the dark corridor, which was even busier than the locker room. Directed by Miguel Gómez and shot over the course of 20 days, the film’s first phase was nearly finished by the time I showed up: The next morning, shooting was slated to wrap.Īs I shimmied into a pair of tan slacks, I spotted Alejandra Vargas, the young woman who hired me. This was the set of “ Italia 90,” a feature-length film produced entirely by a Costa Rican cast and crew. Everyone but me – the only Gringo, and the only guy asked to wear a suit. Nearly every actor was Tico, and everyone spoke Spanish as a first language. Half of them wore the uniforms of the 1990 Costa Rican national soccer team, while the other half dressed in the jerseys of Scotland. A dozen male actors were dressing themselves in knee socks and athletic shorts, bright jerseys and cleats. I stood in the middle of a locker room in the Colleya Fonseca Stadium in Barrio Guadalupe, which buzzed with activity. Then again, that’s how movies often work, especially for actors hired at the last minute. I hadn’t even seen a script, much less read it. ![]() The last I heard, I would be playing a “Gringo reporter,” which I figured would be easy, since I’m a Gringo reporter in real life. “In the U.S., I’m a 34 waist.”Īs the costumer nodded and went to fetch more options, I wondered who exactly I was supposed to be. “What’s your pants size?” she asked, raking through a freestanding shirt rack. I slipped my arms through the sleeves and was relieved that it fit perfectly. “Try this one on,” said the energetic young costumer as she handed me an earth-toned blazer. ![]() (Prices last checked 24 July 2023) USA - save up to 17% when you're buying FL Studio at Thomann* ![]() The most popular version, FL Studio Producer Edition, was sold at up to 17% discount when you buy in US Dollars and are based in the United States, for example. It’s very likely that my own biases made me dissatisfied, I figured. So, I sent one of these things to a friend overseas, asking for her input. Why don’t the links go to the items in question? Seems like lazy linking to me. Once I do all the work to find something I like on one site, I am not going to waste another half an hour to do it all over again somewhere else. As a user, that was totally unsatisfactory to me. However, you must be willing to click away and go off to another site, and then do the work to find it all over again. The only reason I agreed is because I’m an avid letter-writer. Recently I was approached by a marketer for Paperless Post to give their service a whirl in exchange for a review and a link. The biggest problem with the game is that it just feels generic. If you did happen to like Legion, Chariots of War throws a lot more stuff into the mix in terms of what you can do with each city. This helps speed the game up which is nice considering the staggering size of the "Grand Campaign." There are also many more types of structures to build. Smaller buildings are thrown up in a couple of turns. No longer must you wait a full year (four turns) for city structures to be constructed. There are some improvements from the Legion design model. You cannot win, or even get a leg up, by playing nice with another empire. Diplomacy is pretty much worthless as all it's good for is learning the attitude of an empire or the identity of its best friend or enemy. Whether or not you enjoy Chariots of War will directly correlate to your opinion of this combat interface, since the game is all about building armies and fighting it out. You cannot live to fight another day, which is odd because ancient combat rarely (if ever) saw every man die by the sword. Also upsetting is the fact that when you fight a battle, the losing units are completely removed from the game it doesn't matter if they were simply routed off the field or died in battle. While terrain plays an important role in combat (as does attacking from the rear and flanks, if you can pull it off), it's upsetting that your combat options remain a bit limited. Once they break, they head for the hills. There is also no rallying of units once they start to flee. The orders that you may give each army group are more varied than before, and you can still issue formation orders, but a few key commands are missing, such as ordering your skirmishers to unleash their javelins and then withdraw, or ordering spearmen to simply stay put and wait for the oncoming charge. It makes it difficult to plan and orchestrate flanking maneuvers. It's like that famous line in the movie Patton: "If you defeat Rommell's plan, you defeat Rommell." The problem is that while it's a bit better than it was in Legion, the combat model still isn't fleshed out enough.įirst off, the battle map is still too small. The idea behind this method of combat is a sound one devising a pre-battle plan to outwit your opponent and hope that your boys can pull it off. The problem is, you cannot control the units manually when the fighting ensues, you're merely a spectator. When armies meet on the overland map, you play the role of general and draw up a basic battle plan, and then watch as your army runs off in real-time to slug it out against the enemy. The key difference between Chariots of War and other strategy games is that the combat model is completely hands-off. While Chariots of War is undoubtedly a better game than Legion, it still has a generic, paper-thin feel to it. In fact, over 50 empires are in the game (ten of which are playable), as well as four campaigns it certainly doesn't fail due to a lack of scope and size. This time around, developer Slitherine Strategies turns back the clock and shifts the playing field to the ancient Near East, allowing you to play such empires as the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Nubians. Barbarian tribes wander throughout the Fertile Crescent as well, looting and giving players an additional threat to neutralize.Ĭhariots of War is the follow-up title to Legion, last year's underwhelming turn-based strategy game set in ancient Rome. If your laptop or PC can’t run a newer version of Windows, and you can’t afford or don’t want to buy a newer device, then you could consider another operating system, such as Linux. Both operating systems are reasonably solid these days, and you won’t experience a massive culture shock if you switch – they are still Windows, after all, and there are plenty of tweaks you can try to make Windows 10 and Windows 11 look and work like Windows 7. The best thing you can do is bite the bullet and upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11. It would also leave you still using an old OS that no longer gets updates, which isn’t ideal. However, Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, may soon announce it's ending support for older versions of Windows, which means this may be just a temporary move. So, for Windows 7 users who rely on Chrome, what should you do? You could move to another web browser that still supports Windows 7, such as Firefox. If you use a thick pork chop in the instant pot, there is less chance it will overcook than if you use a thin one. It is possible to overcook your pork chops, but usually, if the meat does not come out tender it is because it did not cook long enough to tenderize. Can you overcook pork chops in the Instant Pot? At this temperature, the pork should have a springy, firm texture. When a thermometer probe inserted into the thickest portion of the pork chop holds at 145 degrees Fahrenheit, the meat is fully cooked. How do you know when thick pork chops are done? This is partly due to carry-over cooking. When they’re cooked for even a few minutes too long, whether it’s in the oven or on the stovetop or grill, they’re quick to dry out, and - you guessed it - become tough, chewy, and less than appealing. Once the pressure has built and the cook time has elapsed, allow the pressure to release naturally for 15 minutes (do not open right away or the meat may be tough). Cover, seal, and cook on HIGH (manual) pressure for 40 minutes (for pork loin) or 1 hour (for pork shoulder/butt). How long do you cook pork in the instant pot? A thicker cut of pork chop will work better in the Instant Pot as it is less likely to overcook.
